Elegant Sugilite Jewelry: Popularly known as Royal Azel

Sugilite is an elegant-looking rare gemstone. It was named after the Japanese petrologist Ken-ichi Sugi, who discovered it in 1944. It is considered to be both – a mineral and a gemstone. Because of its popular rich and lustrous shade of pink to purple, it is known as “grape jelly.” It is a sodium lithium silicate mineral. Although the traces of manganese give it its purple color, manganese can also be substituted by iron and aluminum, resulting in a slight variation in the properties and color of sugilite. Sugilite is a prismatic crystal, having a hexagonal crystal system. It is generally translucent in nature. It is marketed with the trade name “Royal Azel,” but in the gemstone community, it is also known as lavulite and luvulite.

Sugilite was first found on a small Japanese island named Iwagi in 1944, but these stones were not of gemstone quality, which is why they were unheard of for decades. Later, another big deposit of sugilite was found on another island, Quebec, in Canada. Other than Quebec, South Africa’s Wessels mine, situated at Northern Cape, also has large deposits of sugilite. Additional deposits of sugilite are in Italy’s Liguria and Tuscany, the New South Wales region of Australia, and Madhya Pradesh in India.

Sugilite rates 6.5 on the Mohs scale of hardness. It is as hard as apatite or orthoclase feldspar. It can be found in different shades like purple, violet, or even light brownish yellow. It can have white streaks. Some sugilite stones have indigo hues, and some have warm plum hues that may range close to pink. If you are planning to buy sugilite jewelry, please note that the cut and clarity of your gemstone will not be the determining factors in evaluating the price. The most significant factor determining sugilite's worth is its color intensity. The price of the stone is in direct correlation with the deepness of the purple hue.

Sugilite is an expensive stone since it is rare. Since this stone has a huge demand in the gemstone industry, it is common to find imitations of sugilite in the market. The majority of these imitations are considered to be ‘synthetic.’ Quartzite and dyed marble are used to imitate sugilite. Serpentine is yet another gemstone that is used as an imitation of sugilite. However, it is generally used in making smaller items such as beads. You can differentiate between genuine sugilite and its imitation by looking at the color. In case the color of the stone is a little dull or flat, or if it has black veins running through it, you can be sure that it is an imitation.

Naturally Sourced Sugilite Jewellery by Rananjay Exports

Beautiful jewelry can be made from this gemstone, such as sugilite pendants, sugilite earrings, sugilite rings, etc. Bangles made of sugilite are pretty popular in many Asian countries. Since sugilite is a cloudy gemstone, and jewelers try to emphasize its cloudiness, you will hardly find any faceted jewelry made of sugilite. And this is also the reason why most of the sugilite jewelry either uses sugilite beads or tumbled and polished sugilite stones. Sugilite is often carved into beautiful figurines, like decorative figures or statues. Sculptors use sugilite mainly for two reasons: first, sugilite naturally occurs in large chunks. Second, sugilite’s hardness is just too suitable, meaning engraving on it is not too difficult, and it is a soft mineral and can be cut into very intricate designs.

Since sugilite is a gemstone linked with the crown chakra, it is excellent for balancing and aligning your crown chakra. Crown chakra allows you to connect with the divine wisdom of the universe, and a balanced crown chakra can help you become more receptive to the messages of the higher realms and universal insights. Wearing sugilite jewelry can make the wearer feel that the universe has its back.

It has many therapeutic uses as well. In case you are suffering from tension and worries, the energetic vibrations of this gemstone will relax you and release all your fears. This stone is also suitable for improving one’s nervous system. It will bring positivity to your life, helping you easily deal with emotional issues and feelings of grief, sadness, and pain. It acts as an excellent tool for increasing physical stamina. It gives you the physical strength and willpower to accomplish your goals. It is also said that Sugilite can easily heal the pain in your head and stomach.

Sugilite pairs very well with other crystals. Pairing sugilite with celestial quartz promotes inner spiritual exploration and connects you with the universe. Sugilite and kunzite also pair well. Kunzite energizes the heart chakra, making the wearer more loving and affectionate. This combination of sugilite and kunzite helps the wearer to come into perfect harmony and peace by deepening the connection with the divine. Labradorite and sugilite are yet another great combinations. This combination improves the strength and courage of the wearer.
