Tektite Pendants: The Energizing Stone

Did you know that tektites are a fascinating sub-category of molten glass? They're also known as foamy glass and have a bubbly texture when observed up close. But what's truly exciting about them is their mysterious origin. While mineralogists are still debating how they were formed, they believe that tektites were created by melting silica-rich rocks during cataclysmic meteorite impacts billions of years ago.

The word "Tektite" derives from an ancient Greek word meaning "molten." These natural wonders are generally found as gravel-sized masses of black, grey, or brown glass ejected from terrestrial debris during meteorite impacts. They range from just a few millimeters to centimeters, with the smallest ones known as microtektites.

What's fascinating is that tektites comprise silicon dioxide with traces of other elements like iron oxide, titanium dioxide, and rare earth elements. They're classified as an amorphous silica-rich igneous rock with a Mohs hardness scale rating of 5 to 6. But what sets them apart from other stones is their ability to show fluorescence under ultraviolet light due to the high content of aluminum oxide within them.

Tektites have existed for centuries and were first described and classified in China in 900 B.C. Today, they're generally sourced from Asian countries like Thailand and Vietnam. However, the largest known deposits of tektites are in Australia and Central Europe, and other notable deposits are found in China, the U.S., and Northwest Africa.

If you look at tektite closely, it's similar to obsidian, a type of terrestrial volcanic glass. But what's exciting is that tektites have unique physical characteristics that distinguish them. Unlike terrestrial volcanic glasses, they're entirely glassy and lack microlites or phenocrysts. And while they're silica-rich, the isotopic composition of tektites is similar to that of shales, which is quite different from the isotopic composition of terrestrial volcanic rocks. Tektites also contain virtually no water, unlike terrestrial volcanic rocks. And lastly, their flow-banding has lechatelierite bands, which are not in terrestrial volcanic glass. Remember that the difference between the water content of tektites and terrestrial volcanic glass is used as an identifying factor when distinguishing between the two.

How amazing is that? Tektites are indeed a wonder of the natural world, and their unique properties make them an exciting field of study for scientists and collectors alike.

Tektites are rare stones requiring special care for cleaning and storing. When storing a tektite necklace, ensure that it is away from sources of moisture and heat, as they can lead to stone deterioration. Tektite rings should not be exposed to intense UV light, which can cause discoloration. Cleaning your tektite bracelet is easy; use mild soap mixed with lukewarm water, rinse, and dry with a soft cloth. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasives.
