Alluring Tektite Jewelry by Rananjay Exports

Tektites are a sub-category of molten glass. Also known as foamy glass, they have a bubbly texture when observed from a close distance. Although the formation and origin of tektites are yet being debated, mineralogists claim that the melting of silica-rich rocks formed tektites. This happened when the meteorite impacts occurred in the cataclysmic event billions of years ago. The word “Tektite” has been derived from an ancient Greek word that means “molten.” Generally, tektites are found as gravel-sized masses composed of black, grey, or brown natural glass. This glass was ejected from terrestrial debris during meteorite impacts. They are generally found in small sizes, ranging from a few millimeters to centimeters. The millimetre-scale tektites are known as microtektites.

Tektite is comprised of silicon dioxide with traces of other elements like iron oxide, titanium dioxide, and rare earth elements. When we talk about the mineral classification of tektites, they are believed to be an amorphous silica-rich igneous rock. They range from 5 to 6 on the Mohs hardness scale. However, the strength of tektites largely depends on their composition. The unique feature that all tektites have is their ability to show fluorescence under ultraviolet light due to the high content of aluminum oxide within them.

Tektites were first described and classified in China in 900 B.C. Tektite stones in today’s times are generally sourced from Asian countries such as Thailand and Vietnam. However, the largest known deposits of tektites are in Australia and Central Europe. Other notable deposits of tektites are found in China, the U.S., and Northwest Africa.

If you look at tektite closely, you will find it similar to obsidian, which is a type of terrestrial volcanic glass. However, tektites have peculiar physical characteristics which distinguish them from obsidian-like glasses. First and foremost, tektites are completely glassy and lack microlites or phenocrysts, which is not true with terrestrial volcanic glasses. Secondly, since tektites are silica-rich, the isotopic composition of tektites is similar to that of shales. And this is quite different from the isotopic composition of terrestrial volcanic rocks. Third, tektites contain virtually no water, unlike terrestrial volcanic rocks. And lastly, in the case of tektites, the flow-banding has lechatelierite bands, which are not present in terrestrial volcanic glass. It must be noted that the difference between the water content of tektites and terrestrial volcanic glass is used as an identifying factor when you need to distinguish between the two.

Tektite is a rare stone, requiring special care when it comes to cleaning and storing them. While storing your favorite piece of tektite jewelry, ensure that it is away from sources of moisture and heat, as it causes the stone to deteriorate over time. Also, tektites should not be exposed to intense U.V. light, as the ultraviolet light leads to stone discoloration. If you want to clean your tektite jewelry, use mild soap mixed in lukewarm water, and rinse your tektite jewelry in it. Post-rinsing, dry your jewelry with a soft cloth.
